ZENER DIODE
A Zener Diode is a special type of diode that is used most extensively as a voltage regulator; this is because, in reverse bias, once the reverse voltage supplied to a zener diode reaches its breakdown voltage. Zener diodes can provide many different types of steady voltages, as they are manufactured with many different levels of breakdown voltages.

SCHOTTKY DIODE
A schottky diode is a diode that has a very low forward-voltage drop and very fast switching times. The fast switching times makes them useful in applications of fast clamping and high-frequency applications approaching the gigahertz range

LED
The LED, which stands for Light-Emitting Diode, is one of the most popular and known type of diode. It is a diode which emits light when it receives sufficient forward current flowing through it.

LASER DIODE
Laser diodes are diodes that emit a very narrow wavelength spectrum and, thus, can focus radiation to a spot as small as 1micrometer in diamteter. Compared to LEDs, laser diodes have very quick response times and a narrow beam spectrum. Laser diodes are used in CD players, CD-ROM drives, and other optical storage drives. They are also used in laser printers, laser fax machines, laser pointers, bar code scanners, and high-performance imagers.

PHOTODIODE
A photodiode is a diode which generates a current when exposed to light. In utter darkness, they act as an open circuit, allowing no current to pass through. When the light they are exposed to becomes bright, they conduct current across from their cathode to anode.

itong main types lang po ba pag-aaralan natin maam? pano po ung iba pang types, madami sila diba po? :) base po dun sa picture na pina save niyo po sa cellphones namin :D -Honeylane Tomenio
ReplyDeleteYes Honeylane! There are many types of diode, but we will just focus on the main types. The picture that I had let you save on your phone are just the examples. Thank you. Sorry for late response :)
Deleteokay ma'am thank you :)
DeleteYou're welcome. Do you have any more questions?
DeleteThe report is very educative and it make things easier to understand because of the pictures, It helps a lot and it is easy to remmber because of the color . I just wanna ask about the LED why is it popular ? It is convinient to use ? thanks mam ..
ReplyDeleteThank you Marielle! :) By the way, LED is the most popular among the diodes because aside from the fact that yes! it is convenient to use, it is also easily noticed by people because of the light that is produced by it. LED's are widely used because of its very helpful purpose as an indicator to many things such as your appliances at home and the like. :)
Deletewhat kind of diodes is commonly used nowadays '? why '?
ReplyDeleteHi Vin! Aside from the many electronic appliances and gadgets we commonly use today, diodes are also used in public facilities. Traffic lights, scoreboards, and vending machines are examples of diode-dependent devices. Light emitting diodes are replacing conventional light bulbs because they require less electricity to produce even more light and it generates a very small or no amount of heat. You can expect to see light emitting diodes at work in large cities, where large television screens display advertisements on buildings (as shown above). LEDs are also making a change in gasoline stations by making gas pumps easier to read.
DeletePhotodiodes have become very useful when it comes to safety in public places. Motion sensors integrate photodiodes to detect changes in light. Devices that associate with motion sensors such as ceiling lights and automatic doors help people see better at night and let people through buildings without effort from opening a door. These innovations improve lives of those who are physically challenged.
Finally, junction diodes, along with the other different types of diodes, are abundant in electronics. There is no need to explain how computers have helped societies today. Early electronic appliances, like digital alarm clocks and radios, used diodes to show the time and modulate frequencies in AM and FM. :)
What type of Diode is the most expensive one?
ReplyDeleteHi Alfred! I cannot really determine whether what is the most expensive diode nowadays because I think that it depends upon the manufacturers of the components, the amount of value of the diodes, the materials and elements used in constructing and making the diodes. These factors affects the amount of the diodes available in the market. And since, thousands of diodes are made and produced every year. It really is hard to determine and say what is the most expensive diode of all.
DeleteCan i interchangeably use the zener diode and LM137 since they are both voltage regulators?
ReplyDeleteZener diode:
Delete-low cost
-more loss
-less accuracy
-less stability
lm317:
-more cost
-more accuracy
-more stability
A Zener Diode is an electronic component which can be used to make a VERY SIMPLE voltage regulator circuit. This circuit enables a fixed stable voltage to be taken from an unstable voltage source such as the battery bank of a renewable energy system which will fluctuate depending on the state of charge of the bank. Hi ma'am, what is the main function of a diode?
ReplyDeleteHello Mam, the most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction), while blocking current in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). :)
DeleteMa'am how do we recognize the negative and positive pin of the Diodes?
ReplyDeleteHi Cheska! We can recognize the negative and positive pin or terminals of Diodes when we try to test it using the multimeter with the continuity test. We can also check it through the appearance of it, some of the types of diodes has the silver lining which indicates the negative polarity.
DeleteWhat are the difference between LED and Photo Diode? They look like the same.
ReplyDeleteHi Katrina! As stated on my blog, the LED, which stands for Light-Emitting Diode, is one of the most popular and known type of diode. It is a diode which emits light when it receives sufficient forward current flowing through it. While a photodiode is a diode which generates a current when exposed to light. In utter darkness, they act as an open circuit, allowing no current to pass through. When the light they are exposed to becomes bright, they conduct current across from their cathode to anode.
DeleteDon't get tricked by the appearance. The picture of the photodiode there is just an example but there are different appearances of photodiodes if you will try to search on Google. It is far different from the appearance of LED :)
DeleteMam, how to test diode using digital & analog multitester? :)
ReplyDeleteHi Eduard! By using the Continuity test in Analog and Digital Multimeter. Connect the leads in forward biasing i.e. Positive to the Anode and Negative to the Cathode. Connections should be tight and neat, after connecting note down the reading. The multimeter will show the forward voltage drop between the two testing leads. :)
